Somehow, a game of Pie Face turned into a trip to Wiley Willies. I have sat in rooms with the most powerful men and women in this country, yet my brain doesn’t extend those same negotiating skills to my daughter.

We walk into the snobby version of Chuck E. Cheese and I scowl at the disinterested teenager stamping numbers on wrists at the door. “Would you like to buy a dine and play pass?” he drones, not bothering to look up.

“Obviously,” I grunt. Who the fuck comes here to do one and not the other?

“How much on the play card?” A party of five-year-olds run past screaming, while an exhausted-looking housewife chases after them with a fist full of tickets.

Bells chime, buzzers ring, and kids cheer all while my heart dies a little. “The big one, please,” Chelsea answers for me.

The kid behind the desk doesn’t wait for my confirmation and rings us up for three dine and play cards with a hundred tokens each. I reluctantly pay the man.

“Can we play a little before we eat?” Chelsea asks the question while hopping up and down like a tiny crack addict about to score.

I turn to Emma, who shoots me a pretty please pout and I hand the cards over without a fight. “I’m getting pizza,” I start to tell them, but they’re gone before I finish the sentence.

They play for an hour while I rapid-fire emails to Cash and Tristian about our plan of attack on this Roger Goldstein thing.

“Daddy, look at all my tickets!” Chelsea squeals, sliding onto the plastic seat. “There’s got to be at least…thirty-eight. That’s a big number, right?” She looks to Emma for confirmation.

“Totally. It’s how old your daddy is,” Emma answers and slides a slice of cheese pizza onto Chelsea’s plate.

“What?” My daughter gapes at me with wide eyes. “I thought you were like, fifteen? Or like in the twenties!”

I grunt. “Try thirties.”

“Almost forties,” Emma whispers under her breath.

“So old!”

The fuck off rests on the tip of my tongue, but I swallow it back. Emma reaches for her own slice and the three of us eat in comfortable silence.
